The Most Replaced Part on Most Cars
Side mirrors take more damage than almost any other component on the vehicle. Parking lot side-swipes, narrow garage passes, hit-and-runs, backing out and clipping a post, vehicles cutting too close in traffic, every one of these takes out a mirror eventually. The good news: most mirror jobs are fast, and most are covered by insurance, often with a low or zero deductible.
Three Levels of Mirror Repair
"Side mirror replacement" can mean any of three things depending on what's damaged:
- Glass only. The mirror glass itself is cracked or fallen out, but the housing, motors, and wiring are intact. Cheapest and fastest, often $80-200 plus a quick install. Same-day in most cases.
- Housing (cover) replacement. The painted plastic housing is cracked or torn off, but the mirror glass, motors, and wiring inside are fine. The cover is replaced and painted to match the rest of the vehicle. Same-day to next-day depending on paint cure.
- Full assembly replacement. The entire mirror assembly is destroyed, motors, glass, housing, sometimes the mounting arm. New assembly installed, calibrated, and color-matched. Most expensive but still typically a 1-2 day job.
We assess what was actually damaged and recommend the minimum scope that restores the mirror properly. No shop should be selling you a full assembly when only the glass needs replacing.
Painted Housings: Factory Color Match
Most modern mirrors have a painted plastic housing, your vehicle's body color, with a separate plastic insert for the mirror glass. When the housing cracks or breaks off, a replacement comes from the manufacturer in primer-gray and needs to be painted before installation.
This is where cheap shops cut corners, they install a primed housing without proper paint matching, or they spray a generic body color from a can. The result is a mirror that's visibly off from the rest of the car. The eye sees a side mirror in your peripheral vision every time you drive, and a mismatched one stands out.
We computer-match your vehicle's actual paint (not just the factory code) with our spectrophotometer, mix a custom formula, and refinish the housing in our booth. The result matches your fenders and doors exactly. More on our color matching process →
Heated Mirrors, Turn Signals, and Power Folding
Modern mirrors are often more than just a reflective surface. We handle the full reconnection of:
- Heated mirror elements. Defroster grids on the back of the mirror glass. Easy to mishandle on install, we connect properly so the defrost actually works.
- Integrated turn signal indicators. The amber LED strip on the outside of the mirror housing. Wiring runs through the mirror arm and connects to the vehicle harness.
- Power-folding motors. Mirrors that fold in automatically when you lock the car, or with a button press. The fold motor lives inside the housing and needs to be properly aligned to the housing geometry.
- Memory positioning. Driver-seat memory often includes mirror position. Calibration is required after assembly replacement.
- Auto-dimming glass. Some premium vehicles have auto-dimming side mirrors that match the auto-dim function on the rearview. Replacement requires the correct part variant.
Blind-Spot Monitoring and Camera-Equipped Mirrors
Many newer vehicles include blind-spot monitoring radar modules housed in the mirror assembly, or side cameras that contribute to the 360-degree surround view system. When the mirror is damaged or replaced, those modules and cameras need to be transferred to the new housing (or replaced entirely) and then calibrated to OEM spec.
We handle this as part of every mirror replacement on an ADAS-equipped vehicle. The calibration is performed in-house, either static or dynamic depending on what the manufacturer requires. More on ADAS calibration →
Insurance and Cost
Most insurance policies cover side mirror damage under comprehensive (vandalism, falling objects, hit-and-runs) or collision (you hit something, someone hit you while you were moving). The deductible question:
- Glass-only replacement: often $80-250. Below most deductibles. Pay out of pocket.
- Housing or full assembly with paint match: often $400-1,200 depending on vehicle, electronics, and ADAS calibration needs. Worth filing if your deductible is under that amount.
- Hit-and-run damage: file under your collision or uninsured motorist property damage coverage. The other driver's policy isn't paying because they're unidentified.
- Vandalism: file under comprehensive. Usually low or zero deductible for vandalism in some policies.
